Onlookers watch as National Park Service rangers excavate loggerhead turtle nest.A few days before over a 100 baby loggerhead sea turtles crawled from their nest and made their way along the stretch of sand to the sea. The excavation was to help some remaining baby turtles trapped within the nest.
The Park Service rangers wanted to rescue any surviving hatchlings, document hatch success, and retrieve valuable data. When the nest had been fully excavated, the ranger had retrieved a total of 14 live hatchlings, five dead hatchlings, one turtle that died while hatching, and several unhatched eggs. The nest had contained 145 eggs, 130 of which were empty by the time the Park Service excavated the site and it was considered a very successful nest. The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the show and the information about the whole loggerhead turtle nesting process.
